Anthony and Yolayni are a hard working young couple living in Nuevo Renacer. Yolayni is attending University to become a teacher. She also works full time in a factory assembling belts and straps and runs a beauty salon out of her home on the weekends. Anthony is fluent in English and works part time as a translator for Live Different as often as there are groups of volunteers doing Build Trips in the Dominican Republic. He was teaching English in a private school but student numbers were so low he had to quit to find better work to support his family. He also stays busy caring for his son Junior, who is 8 years old. Junior is in Grade three and lives part time with Anthony, and lives the rest with his Mom or Grandma. Junior loves baseball, something he learned from his Dad. Anthony manages a local baseball league, organizing games and tournaments for the few teams in the area. As hard as they work, it is always a challenge to make ends meet and save enough to repair their home. The roof leaks very badly when it rains. They live so close to the ocean that the salt in the air rusts through new tin roofing in only a few months. Anthony hopes to find a steady job to support his family and to be able to plan for the future. He is incredibly positive for what is to come for his community, and his family. He proposed to Yolayni the day he heard the news that they would be getting a new home, and they intend to have the wedding the day before they receive the keys to their new home!

Thanks to the ‘Boston Pizza 2015’ volunteers for being a part of this project

Live Different chooses to employ and work alongside local labourers and tradespeople in communities where we have established connections and relationships. No family is ever simply a “project” for us, and each family is chosen and approved through a process with local community workers. Each home is one that will be built with love, hope, and dignity – together.
