Life is anything but easy for the Martinez family of three. One year ago, around this time, Lilianna was diagnosed with colon cancer. Her children who are in grades 8 and 5 have had a very difficult time staying focused with their studies after learning the news of their mothers sickness. Lilianna was forced to step away from working at nearby resorts as a hotel maid in order to start chemo and radiation therapy. “I was so worried that I would die and my kids would be on the streets”, Lilianna shared.

Along with feeling hopeful now that the tests she will receive in the weeks ahead may show some progress, she is also hopeful for all that it will mean to receive a new home. No more rainy nights, filling her home with water. No more rat infestations. No more mosquito infestations. Lilianna tells us that she is so excited to think about having a dry, quiet, safe home for her and her children to experience life together.

Live Different chooses to employ and work alongside local labourers and tradespeople in communities where we have established connections and relationships. No family is ever simply a “project” for us, and each family is chosen and approved through a process with local community workers. Each home is one that will be built with love, hope, and dignity – together.
