Beyond the headlines: The heart of the San Quintín Valley

Spread the love

Away from the headlines, there is a different story being written every day in the San Quintín Valley where the LiveDifferent team and volunteers work in partnership with community members and leaders. It is a story we have been lucky enough to be a part of for twenty years. While sensationalized news often focuses on border-city dynamics, our experience on the ground tells a much more peaceful story.

Over two decades, we have built more than just homes. We have built family-like bonds. Our team and local partners live here, work here, and raise their families here.

A family affair

Do not just take our word for it; you can look at our volunteers. On our most recent Build, we were joined by a group of families who brought their kids along. Watching the next generation work and play together is the ultimate testament to the safety and warmth of this program.

Eleven-year-old Harper just returned from Mexico and shares her experience:

“I feel like I want to always help people now. People donate to things and that’s their way of helping, but being a part of what you’re helping with is way more meaningful. Just to see and feel what you’re making happen. Nothing feels better than being there. I wouldn’t trade that vacation for anything.”

Harper’s mom, Jodi Ulrich, says, “For me personally, and I think I can speak for all the adults on our Build, it was a life-changing experience. We sweat, we laughed, we cried, and we changed the life of this beautiful family that we got so close with. It really was like no other ‘vacation’ we’ve ever had.

“If you have any inclination to do a family Build, I highly recommend it! It will bring your family closer together and you will create a beautiful experience you will never forget.”

Why volunteer for a Build in Mexico?

The news might make people afraid of the unknown, but building a house alongside a family tends to do the opposite. It builds empathy. It proves that we all want the same things. We all want a safe place to sleep, a future for our children, and a community to belong to.

You will see the dust, the hammers, and the hard work. Mostly, you will see the smiles. You will see kids from both sides of the border sharing a laugh and a soccer ball. That is the Mexico we know.
